PuppetMaster: Stopping The Flu With Puppet Power

Puppetry in commercial advertising was popular for most of the 20th century and continues to be now. There has been a resurgence in the past ten years, and we’re gonna take a look over the next several weeks at the really great uses of puppets in commercials. We took a little break from you guys to get the creative ideas flowing again, but we are back and ready to tackle new and interesting topics and events!

First up is The Cold Monster created for the new Zicam campaign.

Designed and built by Legacy Effects, a company dedicated to live action effects, the Cold Monster is there to illustrate that “you don’t catch a cold, it catches you.” It’s not Citizen Kane, but it is pretty effective for a cold commercial, and a very impressive use of puppetry and animatronics. Legacy Effects (to reduce their mile long resume to a list of four credits) is noted for their work in the Iron Man films, Life of Pi, The Avengers and Avatar. The puppet for the Zicam film hid puppeteer Mark Smolinski.

Here is an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the making of the commercial, and we will see you next week!
