Junkyard Arts is looking to expand on our music features, so we’re introducing a monthly
round-up of shows: ShowBoat!
We’re based in the New England area, so some of these shows may not be accessible to everyone. Sorry. Most shows mentioned are part of tours though, so keep an eye out for these bands coming to a venue near you in the future.
And if there is a concert coming up you believe has been horribly neglected, post a comment
and let everyone know!
7/23- William Elliot Whitmore at Great Scott
I was introduced to Whitmore when he had what could’ve have been insurmountable gig of opening for The Pogues. He was one man with guitar and banjo, playing a stripped down Southern blues/country style, in front of a crowd of drunk Boston punks raring for Celtic punk. He was amazing, and makes his way back to the city in support of his sixth album. Be ready for somber songs and beer-swigging tunes.
7/29- Boston Band Crush Show at Middle East Downstairs
This show has a lot of talented and unique local acts, so if you are trying to get a sense of all the different elements the Boston scene has to offer, this might be a good night to get out.
Highly-recommend: Walter Sickert and the Broken Toys and This Blue Heaven.
7/30&31- Newport Folk Festival at Newport, RI
Over the past few years, this annual fest has morphed from being a folky-only event to a showcase of modern bands that explore the dynamics of folk, country, blues, funk and straight-up rock and roll. This year’s line-up is arguably one of the most talented, ripe with neo-folk and country stars like Justin Townes Earle and Carolina Chocolate Drops as well as legends like Earl Scruggs, Elvis Costello and mother-fucking WANDA JACKSON. Seriously, it’s worth going just for the original Queen of Rock n’ Roll.
(Side note: This one is sold-out, so the only way in is to win tickets…I’m sure there are other ways, but I’m trying to stick with suggestions that are “legal”. That said, if you “win” an extra ticket, remember me.)
