Marketers have it all wrong.
So do parents of little girls.
Frankly, every single woman I know who had Barbie dolls as a kid first dressed them up pretty, and when they realized being pretty and stupid was boring…
-they cut off her hair
-ripped off her head
-made her have sex with every other Barbie, Ken or whoever was Skipper’s bf .
Then, we presented the monster on a shelf, or hung her from the ceiling until the end of high school. She didn’t have to worry about kids, what boys thought about her or whether or not she was ugly. Doll-torture was just a normal part of growing up girl.
If the Disney princesses looked this awesome when I was growing up, I could have saved my mom a lot of emotional turmoil and just jumped into the ‘I DONT CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF ME!’ with these dolls on my shelf or paintings on my wall instead of giving her false hope that I would gently care for my luxen dolls and cherish their purity.
and can I just say: dinglehopper for an arm? Genius.
