Special Announcement: Save Boston MBTA Weekend Access

Hey fellow Bostonians and suburbanites – we’ve got a big problem on our hands. The state, in it’s infinite wisdom, is choosing to raise MBTA travel rates (again, despite cuts in services) and is planning to cut weekend commuter rail travel all together.
SIGN THIS PETITION TO SAVE WEEKEND MBTA ACCESS.
Needless to say, this would be an economic and logistical disaster. Thousands of people rely on the outer-reaching rail line for travel to and from the city for jobs, school, family and healthcare. Not to mention something very close to my heart: cultural experiences.
When I was in high school, the commuter rail was my only access to the city from the ‘burbs. We would save up whatever money we got from our crappy mall jobs and blow it all in Cambridge and Boston and feel like cool kids because we did some irresponsible galavanting around the ‘big’ city. As I got older it was my only access to Red Sox games, concerts in Worcester, the MFA, the Pops and my college internship at the SpeakEasy Stage Company. The commuter rail is the cultural lifeline for thousands of people using the city for its artistic institutions, sporting events, and historic excursions – and for folks living in the city, it’s their only way out to their families in the ‘burbs.
The state wants to cut all weekend access to this lifeline because we’ve got a deficit and they can’t possibly think of another way to curb costs (how about cutting useless programs? not buying really expensive curtains? ending contract with abusive unions?). And they clearly don’t have the foresight to recognize the economic devastation to our state and specifically cultural institutions this type of drastic cut would make.
Even if you don’t use the commuter rail yourself for travel, there are thousands of folks who rely on it for both pleasurable and dire reasons. Sign this petition and make your voice heard – support weekend commuter rail travel and support the wonderful cultural experiences our city and the suburbs have to offer all of us.
Many thanks,
-L.
