I am just totally taken aback by the work of Theodora Axente in such a wonderful way. I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely sure what she’s saying in all of them, but that’s my favorite part of art, I guess. Sometimes, we don’t need to know what it’s about to just enjoy the aesthetics, the material manipulation & artistry. Sometimes the meaning is different for the viewer than it is for the artist. Sometimes there is no meaning. Here, I do feel a sense of characters being enveloped by their exteriors, or maybe adorning themselves with items of objects and being swallowed whole by the attempt. Changing exteriors. Changing appearances. Relation to stimulii. Reality vs Fiction. Honestly, I don’t really know. And I don’t care. These paintings make me curious, and that is exciting. See for yourself.
