I have, unarguably, the best fans on the interwebs. Not only because they support this very site by consistently reading and sharing articles, but because they engage about art, pop culture and all the fun things that make The Junkyard, The Junkyard.
And they are the best because they introduce me to new things – like this fan who recommended I check out her favorite artist: Saturno Butto.
And let’s just say my world has been improved. Yours will too once you see his work. Heads up most of this is NSFW.
Saturno’s work is an ex-Catholic’s dream with the simultaneous degradation and sexualization of such classic religious iconography. At times bastardizing the sexual repression inherent in such religious followings, and others reveling in the sensuous interpretation of otherwise benign teachings. He also explores the practice of submission and domination through BDSM imagery – which in many circles brings about a sexual experience of ‘religious’ proportions; or is it that submitting to the power of your God is a full body ‘sexual’ experience? Or perhaps it’s both.
Like fables or words found in religious doctrine, these paintings each tell a story of danger, possibility, surrender, lust, obedience & awakening.
This is all of course secondary to his mastery of his tools (most of what I show here is oil on wood), framing and just plain ol’ lovely use of chiaroscuro. There’s not much more to say than that his work has me squirming and panting and yearning for more.
