Welcome back! We’ve got a fun challenge this week, and the return of a Foundation Challenge! This time, our artists need to create a face for a grim reaper. The cast of characters included Absolutely Horrifying Bug-Eyed Reaper, Crackly Skin Hipster Reaper, to Traditional Reaper and some sort of Lizard Reaper. Overall, everyone impressed!
SPOTLIGHT CHALLENGE: Create a Scary-Funny Character
Lauren: Well I LOVE this idea. C’mon. Electri-Cute! Clever girl. However, I’m not sure what’s up with the head shape. Why so huge and bulbous in the back? That mixed with the grey skin tone is a little confusing. I agree with the judges that it reads more ‘alien’ than ‘funny ghost’. I do not, however, think it was as much of a failure as they seemed to.
Judges: Pleased with the ambition, but it doesn’t read ‘funny’
Eddie: Bat-Head (baseball player with bat through his head)
Lauren: hmm…if the bat weren’t on the back of the head, and if it wasn’t green, and if the face looked like a face and not a Scream mask…maybe it would have worked? Ve had it right when she said bulging eyes and exaggerated facial features would have sold it. Also: why is the hat shaped INTO his head?! I don’t get it and at this point, I don’t want to.
Judges: Artichoke head
Miranda: Off With Her Head
Lauren: I like the idea, but it’s super monotone. Underwhelming paint job, but nice face sculpt and severed head sculpt. But, I mean, that’s it. She didn’t really do a whole lot here, compared to the other contestants. This is what we call phoning-it-in.
Roy: The Cain Brothers
Lauren: Now this is a Roy, all the way. I just love this piece. The face sculpt of the bottom ‘brother’ is really excellent (glad he decided to include the stogie, though not loving that he’s blue) and it succeeds in being funny. Proportions are a bit off, but given the time restrictions I’m going to let it pass. Nice to see Roy really fighting for this one.
Judges: Top person looks dead-ish, love the idea and execution
Tate: Dead Cowboy who is also a Children’s Show Host
Lauren: Well this look is really great. Once again, his props are fantastic and I love his overall look. Tate is a really dependable artist – rarely am I not impressed. I think this is far superior to last weeks look, and the message comes through clearly. And I am just loving the horse head! I’m bummed they didn’t ask him to stay up and talk about the piece rather than just be ‘safe’. Would have loved to hear more about this character and see more of that horse head!
Judges: Love the skin texture and application
Laura: Some sort of ghost scientist
Lauren: Really lovely work this week. Great, detailed, chest piece, really smooth paint job. I don’t love the blood in the mouth, but the pop of red is nice, so…I’ll live with it. The judges don’t think he’s quite funny enough, but I think the exaggerated featured and the slight balding is pretty funny. Laura doesn’t strike me as having the same sense of humor as the judges…or most people.
Judges: Very ghost-like, great paint, not funny
The Winner: Roy! Back in the saddle, baby
The Loser: Eddie. While I wasn’t a fan of a lot of his pieces, he had a great attitude and always seemed to be open to criticism and the experience. What more can you ask for? Keep working on it, buddy. You’re young and have time to hone your craft.
