Welcome back! In this episode the artists have their first individual challenge, and it’s a doozy! First, there is no Foundation Challenge (thanks for the correction on that @rubiconeast!) this week since the artists need enough time to work individually on their projects, which are…..
SPOTLIGHT CHALLENGE: Create a subterranean creature based on a given theme.
Roy: Tentacled Worm Creature
Lauren: Roy is a go-big-or-go-home kinda guy. He went real big with this piece, but unfortunately his mold was too ambitious and one mistake (wrong foam) effectively ruined his whole concept and he had to scrap it at the last minute. Such a bummer because his original idea was really out there and would have been a great moment. Unfortunately the piece he ended up with at the last minute was just not great. The head piece is really nice, but the rest is just garbage. Let’s just say the body was so bad, the photographer didn’t even take a shot of it…
Judges: Good God, almighty – what happened here?
Alana: Scary/Sexy mermaid. Ugh
Lauren: I rail on this girl for making everything sexy/scary, but the sculpt on the head of this creature is really beautiful. I wish there was a little more going on in the front of the face since it reads fairly blank, but the profile is really nice.
Judges: Nice job
Frank: Eyeless, toothed creature
Lauren: I hate the idea of teeth in an area where there is no mouth, so I’d glad he toned down his character to keep the teeth near an actual opening. I think his final sculpt is really great. The paint job is also really beautiful. Totally creepy, and he’s the only one that got rid of the eyes, which actually surprised me a bit. Seemed like a natural direction for a subterranean critter.
Judges: One of the judges favorites, great sculpting and intelligent choices.
Laney: Woman who is a roach motel
Lauren: The eyes were cartoonishly large, so you kind of feel like it’s a mask, but I do love the concept and I think she put in a lot of work this week on her own project. It’s seriously disgusting. Proved she can do more than just beauty makeup for sure.
Judges: not much to say on this end.
Laura: Naked Mole Rat
Lauren: I love that Laura always goes with the grossest thing possible. It couldn’t just be a rat lady, it had to be a terrifying rat lady who looks like she would steal your cookies off the doorstep (and your first born from its crib and eat it from the inside out).
Judges: She’s a little pink for having lived underground, but otherwise they love it, brilliant head sculpt
RJ: Armadillo Brat (bat, rat)
Lauren: RJ said it looked like a cross between a Ferengi and an artichoke.
And that is why I love him. And he’s kind of right, though I wouldn’t really hold that against him. I still think his sculpt is great, and it was really just because it came under green lights that it read ‘vegetable’. I thought it was great.
Judges: Like the profile, not a huge fan of paint job
Miranda: Mutated Mole Rat
Lauren: Beautiful as always! Loving the paint job here – it really reads as flesh. I also feel like I can smell it from the tv.
Judges: Amazing job, neck and head are completely convincing
Scott: Octopus/Human Hybrid
Lauren: He had some big issues here. I’m not getting octopus/human on it, other than the suction cups on the arms. The head is just confusing. He lost his direction a bit here.
Judges: Spots on the head look like fruit cereal.
Lauren: The teeth are a little useless the way they are protruding, but I guess some fish have teeth like that so…I’ll let it slide. I am not into the costuming (other than the stole – that’s a good choice) but I’m actually impressed with the overall job here!
Judges: not much from this end
Lauren: The sculpt isn’t great to begin with, and with the downright awful paintjob, well, this piece is definitely in the bottom. I just don’t understand why, when he realized the paint was pumpkin orange, he kept applying it! Why not try to blend with a lighter color?! And the Taylor Momsen eye makeup was a truly bad choice.
Judges: The painting is so bad it looks like a Halloween mask, rudimentary sculpting
Lauren: I wish there wasn’t so much stuff going on in the face area, because I love the beetle-feel of this whole makeup. The fact that the face could move but the ‘shell’ piece didn’t was a really great touch. I think he just went a little too far with the face tentacles. Your dude has ARMS – he doesn’t need face feelers.
Judges: Not much on this end, they seemed to like it
Winner: Miranda! Girl has been dominating in every sense of the word. Laura came in second – they have very different pieces so it must have been a hard choice this week. It was nice seeing Laura at the top this week though – and it’s awesome to see the ladies just kill it this season.
Loser: Adolfo. Lots of poor choices in this work. He’s a young, hard working guy and he’s got a lot to learn and seems like he’s motivated. Best of luck to him.
