Big challenge for these contestants this episode, emotions are racing, and everyone loves their mom. Let’s get to it.
SPOTLIGHT CHALLENGE: Use a LA Arboretum as inspiration to create a Mother Nature figure.
Everyone takes this opportunity to talk about how much they love their moms. Everyones mom is the ‘best’, everyone is ‘really close’ with their mom. RJ’s mom had a sweet bee hive hairdo and he loved that about her, Tate’s mom raises deer. Laura’s mother is modeled after a venus fly trap…because: naturally. As much as all the love, rainbows and pixie dust is making my frozen core shudder in discomfort, Frank’s story is just heartbreaking. This year his father died, and now his mom’s Parkinson’s is kicking in. I’d make a joke about a sad trombone, but man, I just want someone else to give Frank a hug for me so I don’t have to. Keep your chin up, kiddo. Your parents would want you to follow your dreams!
And with that, let’s go fuck each others moms.
RJ: Bee Hive Babe
Lauren: Well, RJ, I love ya. But this isn’t great. There just didn’t seem to be a lot of work – even though we know you put work into it…it just didn’t read at all and seemed to skirt the challenge.
Judges: What is this? It is only with contempt that I regard [this] decision
Laura: Caterpillar/Trumpet/Rose Goddess
Lauren: I absolutely love the paint job on this work! It may be a big risk, but man it just totally pops, and the costuming is really lovely. Everything about this is just gorgeous – I could stare at it all day. Note: the photos do not do justice what you see in the episode!
Judges: Intelligent design, sublime, so beautiful I can’t get over it.
Headless Butterfly Mutha
Lauren: I really like the work she put into the head piece, with the moss and ephemera, but you can definitely tell that she was unable to fix the makeup (due to the model having to leave before she was completed).
Judges: incomplete paint job, otherwise ok
Tate: “My mom raises deer” Mom
Judges: not much (how?!?!) on this end
Frank: Simple Flower Mother
Lauren: Really love the cowl and the lines of the head sculpt. It’s a more literal interpretation of the challenge (like Alana) but it is very elegant.
Judges: Nice head piece and profile
Lyma: Pregnant Earth Mother
Lauren: There’s a ‘rabbits fucking’ joke in here somewhere…I love the wig, I love that it’s over the top, I love the legs as roots. Everything Lyma does seems to have a heavy ‘fashion’ element, and I think that’s a fresh perspective on the show. Interested to hear what the judges have to say. (note: photog totally didn’t take a picture of the belly close up! argh!)
Judges: Bold, great first impression, love the overall nature, the rabbit is genius
Scott: Foxy Foliage Femme
Lauren: She doesn’t look like she has any leaves on her at all (ok I can see that she does in the head shot)…so I’m not sure why he spent so much time painting leaves? She looks like a lady made of lava. Not impressed. Also: why.
Judges: Reads more ‘horror’ than beauty, too orange
Alana: Orchid Mother
Lauren: ooh she’s beautiful! Alana is definitely digging this head shape though – and while I do like it a lot, it would be nice to see her do something else as well. There are some big edges happening on the face, but otherwise she has a lot of presence. Lovely paint job as well. Overall, I’m a big fan.
Judges: (not much on this end)
Eddie: Warrior Goddess Mother
Lauren: Well, I gasped…because it looks like it’s not actually done. Why is the face just sticking out?! I don’t understand if this was a conscious choice or if he didn’t finish. I’m just not feeling this at. all. The body is so rigid!
Judges: Tried to do too much, didn’t show any beauty makeup at all.
Roy: Seasonal Tree Mother
Lauren: Really into the tree branches and she is so beautifully textured! Love the scale here as well. Glad he pulled this off. It’s gorgeous.
Judges: Balance is on point, great color choices. Stunning
Lauren: She’s very green. Not that it’s a problem, I just wish the skin tone was a little more varied. Nice head piece and costuming though. Great job again.
Judges: (not much on this end)
Winner: Laura!! While there were some really lovely pieces this week, I feel like there was no other option here – this week Laura just killed it. I would like to give a shout out to Lyma who has really taken me by surprise – I wasn’t that impressed early on but she is really showing promise and vision.
Loser: RJ! ACK! Man this bums me out so hard. RJ is just such a great personality (and talent), I’ll miss him. Just shows that one bad makeup can really take you down in this competition. Fare thee well, RJ. You will be missed.
