Getting down to the nitty gritty here with only 4 contestants left…and 3 after tonight.
SPOTLIGHT CHALLENGE: Create a Bird-Human Hybrid based on birds they have chosen.
Roy: Blue-Throated Macaw
Lauren: As always, Roy is going big. Large fabricated pieces, lots of ‘parts’, and I genuinely feel terrible when his body piece smashes into the table, but I’m glad he recovered. His final piece leaves a little to be desired in that I wish the person could put their arms down. Some of the paint was a little slapped on, and the seams were super apparent, but overall I am always happy to see his work come up to the judging panel. While it might not always be the best makeup, there is something really great about seeing these huge ideas come to life. In a real-world application, I imagine Roy would be a valuable asset to any makeup team, if not being the leader of a team.
Judge: Amazes Ve with his fabrication skills, lots of work
Laura: Umbrella Cockatoo
Lauren: Laura, never one to settle for a simple idea, decides to go with an elderly umbrella cockatoo. My only concern is that she took away the defining characteristic of the bird: the fanning head feathers! Ugh! The sculpt is really nice, and the color choices are really nice, but argh I wish we saw at least some of the head plumage.
Judges: Captured the essence of the challenge, so much character
Miranda: Silver Cheeked Hornbill
Lauren: There is a reason Miranda’s pieces are so beautiful: patience. The time she takes to make sure every detail is perfect is a great quality, however it has been a bit of a hindrance in the past 2 challenges. While it may be real-world necessary, it’s not prudent in a reality show. This particular sculpt was just so beautiful, but it had really set her back, time-wise.
My problem with this, is that you can actually see the mouth behind the mask (on tv, not showing up in these images). It looks like a rubber mask. A really well sculptured rubber mask, but a rubber mask. Bummed out, here.
Judges: Love the sculpt, played it safe
Tate: Egyptian Vulture
Lauren: Holy Skeksis, Batman. Tate has decided to go balls to the wallz with this makeup, and when this piece is the deciding factor in whether or not you get to be in the finals (and back to the finals, in his case) then you’ve got to show up. My concern with this piece is that from far away, it is very hard to read. The actual bird has a bright yellow face, and then is white. While I appreciate his gusto and taking liberties with the bird, I just wish there was a little less going on. Overall, obviously, this is crazy impressive. My favorite part is how he planted the feathers into each little bulge. His attention to detail is just mind boggling.
Judges: “Dang, you really did a LOT” – Ve
WHO WON: Roy, Laura, & Tate will be going to the finale!
GOING HOME: Miranda. I don’t feel bad. This girl is so stupid-talented. She’s going to be working in the industry in no time. It was great having her and seeing her work, but I’m ok with this decision by the judges.
