Welcome back! In this episode we’ve got horror movies, demons in drag, and fairytale transformations. The episode starts off with Roy winning the Quickfire challenge to take a male model and turn him into the woman of your nightmares. His Demon-in-Drag was pretty…terrifying. Can’t find a picture of it right now, but it was essentially a female-face-shaped clear mask that he kind of painted over, and then painted the face underneath as well…and it was just creepy as shit.
Also terrifying: Double Elimination this week!
SPOTLIGHT CHALLENGE: Working in groups of 2, re-imagine Mother Goose fairytales with modern whimsy.
Laura & Frank: Little Miss Muffet
Lauren: AH! NOT WHIMSICAL! I know a lot of work went into this but…Miss Muffet took a dark turn…though I will say, him giving away flowers is kinda cute.
Judges: Doesn’t read whimsical, doesn’t suit the challenge.
Alana & Laney: The Five Pigs
Lauren: Kind of horrifying…but I guess it is whimsical! I love the bacon bow and while I’m super grossed out by the pearl-necklace-stripper-bra, it is a nice touch. These two are fighting to stay at the head of the pack this season.
Judges: “her chest gives new meaning to ‘pulled pork'” “she’s a beaut”, “Does anyone have a dollar?”
Roy & RJ: Cat in A Fiddle
Lauren: Reminiscent of RJ’s bellhop, which I love love loved! Here we have two extremely talented people coming together for something really wonderful – I love the cat playing the fiddle with his tail, I love the sculpt on the face. This screams whimsy!
Judges: Beautiful sculpt, looks like a cartoon character
Adolfo & Lyma: Humpty Dumpty
Lauren: It doesn’t read eggshell to me – more like petals. She looks beautiful, and I think the paint job does feel like splattered egg, though I wish there were some more edges on the shell to read more sharply. I also thought it was kind of adorable that Lyma insisted the work was inspired by Lady Gaga.
Judges: Love that they went more couture and fashion, good approach and execution.
Tate & Miranda: Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater
Lauren: I LOVE this makeup. The saturation of the paint, the overall look, and the sculpting is really lovely. I also really appreciate the texture of the whole piece – really feels organic. And the fingers! Ooh the fingers!
Judges: Beautiful work, intelligent sculpting, head to toe complete.
Eric & Rick: Crooked Sixpence
Lauren: I literally said out loud “oh my christ” This is not whimsical, and not really crooked. Twisted, maybe. The back-arm is a poor choice. I can see where their heads were at, but it just went in the wrong direction. The paint job was nice, and I applaud their dedication to their vision.
Judges: My problem with it is the idea.
Scott & Eddie: Man on the Moon
Lauren: I didn’t get a great look at this one during the airing, but seeing it now, I’m actually really pleased. The American flag was a cute touch, and while I’m not totally convinced she looks like she’s made of moon rock, I can see what they were going for. The head sculpt is nice. Not sure what I think of the moon cheese though…is moon cheese green? Someone call Neil and Buzz.
Judges: not much from them, other than this look was safe.
Winner: Tate & Miranda!! Very deserving win – great work this week (though they consistently do great work)
Big Winner: Miranda!
Loser: Rick & Eric. Neither of them were able to pull off the challenge this week and had to go. Eric has done nice work in the past, so I have high hopes for him.
