Now I know this is going to sound terrible – but this trailer makes me want to actually read a book I otherwise would never really have bothered with.
And it’s not that I don’t love Russian literature. I actually do. I love that it is depressing, filled with hopelessness, unrelenting despair and inherent acceptance of such that I find it charming. Nabokov is one of my favorite authors with Bend Sinister topping my list. It’s probably the most difficult book to read, for me anyway, because of the alliteration and constant word play (though I guess this could be said for all his books)…and the fact that it is fucking depressing start to finish, with an extra kick in the balls in the end.
I guess I never really thought to pick up Anna Karenina. Maybe because I couldn’t actually pronounce the title for a while. Maybe because I hate Jane Austen and for whatever illogical reason I just assumed Karenina would be similar tripe. Or maybe because I dated a pseudo-Ruskie and just couldn’t relive the drama of the relationship. Sure it’s all beautiful and dark and sensual in the beginning. And then you find yourself in opposite, candle-lit corners reading something depressing all the while wondering if there is anything left to live for because the overwhelming boredom is certainly the crawl of death approaching.
But if the book is anything as lovely and torrid as this trailer, then I’ll give it the good ol’ college try!
