To celebrate the institutions 70th anniversary, UNESCO had planned on a beautiful display at the headquarters. A visual splendor featuring a large-scale projection project illuminating various facades at the site called Mosaic of Change, and was curated by Millennium ART and uses technology from Obscura Digital, a San Francisco-based creative digital studio. The event, sponsored by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, highlighted UNESCO’s mission of “education, scientific, and cultural collaboration as a means of achieving peace and justice throughout the world”, had been scheduled for November 16th.
In a terrible chance of fate this coincided, within a matter of days, with terrorist attacks in Beirut on the 12th and just outside their gates, so to speak, in Paris on the 13th.
With the project already in place, Millennium ART and Obscura Digital were able to pull together the event (which also featured a live orchestra) days ahead of schedule to serve as an immediate response to the Paris attacks. The message of Peace, literally scrolled across the building & structures in various languages, could be seen from across the city.
