Museum of Clean Ready To Buff & Shine

museum of clean idahoSo, there’s a guy in Idaho who really loves to clean.  Buffin’, scrapin’, wipin’ – it’s all the thing of dreams to Don Aslet of Idaho.

He turned his lifelong passion into a national janitorial business (bringing in $100million annually), and now, the Museum of Clean.  Bust out the Swiffers kids, you’ve got art on your hands.

First, can we discuss how hilarious the museum’s logo is?  It’s a white glove…rubbing a Greek column.  Love it.

Now, what kind of stuff will be at the museum?  Well, there will be some antique vacuum cleaners, a Civil War-era operating table, a 1,600 year old bronze toothpick, a vintage washing machine and a horse-drawn vacuum from 1902.

Horse-drawn vacuum. What space does one vacuum with a horse on the other end of it?  And if a horse fit in it, why vacuum and not just sweep?  But I digress.

Aslet has a pretty heartwarming outlook on his latest venture, saying “I found out something interesting, people are into cars and food and sports…Cleaning is way down on the list. But If you took something as dull as cleaning and made it humorous, then cleaning goes to the top.”

And I’m gonna be honest, I’d be curious to see what would be in the museum.  I love the technology design space in the MoMA, and the new furniture exhibits at the Boston MFA’s New Wing – I imagine the Museum of Clean is fairly similar in the intrigue department, though perhaps not as…pretty.

I imagine this is a museum that children would rather avoid, but perhaps by introducing them to the history of the mop they will be more apt to appreciate that they have Dysons and Swiffers to do all their dirty work for them.
