German artist Jonas Burgert is just wonderful.
There, I said it.
He has a way of mercilessly blending iconography and ritual with urban exploration, civilization (re)discovery and dangerous whimsey. It’s as if someone slipped Dorothea Lang and Walker Evans some acid, and this is what they shot.
The final product is this bizarre-o, voyeuristic world that is all together concerning as it is eerily familiar.
He’s got a new show at the BlainSouthern, Berlin and I’m once again lamenting my limited world travel opportunities. In lieu of seeing it in person, here’s some of his work – enjoy.
