So here’s some great news: apparently a “bizarre” super heavyweight groundhog-like creature lived with with the dinosaurs in Madagascar, and went to each other’s cookouts and pool parties millions of years before large mammals were thought to even exist.
They were about 2x the size of a modern-day groundhog and featured “rodent-like incisors and wear-proof molars, which were presumably use for tucking into roots, seeds, and fruit”. In addition to being adorable and fluffy, they also pushed back the origins of mammals by about, oh, 25 million years.
So that’s neat.
Bummer alert: the lineage disappears. In the words of researcher David Krause of Stony Brook University, these little fellas apparently ‘didn’t make it’.
Well. At least they were cute while they lasted.
